Kotomisi doll

Gift in 1905 from Pauline and Marie Micheli, respectively the widows of Jean-Louis and his son Marc Micheli,
both close to the Genevan Protestant elite and the Moravian missions
Context of creation not documented
MEG Inv. ETHAF 003530
This doll represents an Afro-Surinamese woman, descended from enslaved people, wearing a koto, traditional clothing still worn
by some women at commemorations. The term Kotomisi is made up of “misi” which means “madam” and “koto”, “skirt”. As well as the koto, she is wearing a scarf (angisa) and a blouse (yaki).
Marc Micheli may have received these objects from Surinam through his scientific collaboration network in South America, but he is not thought to have travelled there himself.
