Woman’s headdress Ekori of Herero origin
Namibia. Before 1906. Leather, iron
Bought from Marie Solioz in 1921, former Victor and Marie Solioz Collection; provenance and context of creation not documented
MEG Inv. ETHAF 008576
Brought back from Namibia by Victor and Marie Solioz in 1906, these two objects bear direct witness to colonial violence.
In 1904-1908, the 20th century’s first genocide was perpetrated by the German Empire in Namibia against the Herero and Nama. The European demand for Namibian cultural goods grew and the Solioz couple probably bought this collection “wholesale”. The dating of these objects leaves little doubt about the genocide and extremely violent context which made their acquisition possible. M. Berazategui/MEG
