Coptic pendant
Egypt. 19th century. Silver filigree, glass cabochons, coins
Gift from Aloïse Pictet (1890-1952) in 1940; brought back from Egypt
by her husband Oswald Pictet; context of creation not documented MEG Inv. ETHAF 016971
While his brothers Raoul (1846-1929) and Eugène (1852-1919) settled in Egypt for business purposes – one with a refrigeration company, the other a brasserie project – the banker Oswald Pictet (1844-1904) merely travelled there, in 1888. Some 180 antique and contemporary objects make up the heterogeneous corpus of his Egyptian collection, part of which he gave to
the young Ethnography Museum in 1902. His widow donated
a second set of objects forty years later. The pieces, without documentation, are briefly described in the Museum’s inventory register. F. Morin/MEG
