The Senegalese musician Singsing Faye (1937-2015) was a master tambourine player descended from a long line of griots specialized in drum-playing. He met Laurent Aubert, then curator at the Ethnography Museum, in Dakar in 1989 while he was on a prospecting mission for the Ethnomusicology Workshops. The latter commissioned a set of eight drums from him. Singsing Faye, invited to the “Drums of the Earth” festival, brought the instruments to the Museum in June 1990 recommending that they be played. This was done in 2019 by the Japanese percussionist Midori Takada. M. Leclair/MEG
