Paddle
Guyana, Maroni. Boni. Second half 20th century. Wood and acrylic paint Gift from geology professor Felice Jaffé in 1985; provenance and creation context not documented. MEG Inv. ETHAM 054610
These paddles were carved by men for women to use on the river or to decorate their homes. The ndjuka style paddle from the first half of the 20th century has on its shaft a particularly skilful piece of carving with regard to its shape and to the split ribbon continuing onto the blade. Concerning the second paddle, eastern Maroons gradually developed the use of painting on women’s paddles in the second half of the 20th century. The shaft and blade thus combine koti tembe carving with ferfi tembe painting on one work. T. Mouzard
