The mbira is the main, essential and emblematic instrument of the musical cultures of the Shona of Zimbabwe. It can be played for pleasure but is also connected to a form of spirituality. Repetitively playing a series of gradually varying sound motifs creates a meditative and concentrated state of mind. The Music for Development association, founded by Forward Mazuruse in Harare, enables children to try out the wealth of the mbira repertoire on good quality traditional instruments. M. Leclair/MEG
