Des rites différents pour un même Dieu
Clément-Marie Biazin (1924-1981), Yakoma painter
Central African Republic, Bangui. 1970s. Gouache on paper
Jean-Yves Montange Collection, loan from Jean-Dominique Pénel
and Justin Montange
Biazin has an ecumenical vision. According to him, in Africa, people have always believed in a god who created the world and human beings. If there are different forms of traditional adoration (here they kneel down before Yanda, there they dance while praying to the water god), it is the same thing for the new forms from Europe (here Catholics, there Protestants). A common faith in a supreme god results in different institutions and rites of prayer. Other paintings of his also refer to Islam. J.-D. Pénel
