The totem poles were restored several times over the years. Between May and October 1971, a particularly intensive operation was carried out, as this series of photographs shows. The damaged wood was treated with chemical products in order to strengthen it and protect it from mould and insect infestation. The surfaces were cleaned and repainted. The removable parts were repaired as were the protective lead pieces at the top of the poles to prevent water leaking into them. L. Monot/MEG
