L’initiation des jeunes gens
Clément-Marie Biazin (1924-1981), Yakoma painter
Central African Republic, Bangui. 1970s. Gouache on paper

and Justin Montange
A society lives thanks to the knowledge its Elders possess and which they hand down from generation to generation. The transition to adulthood is made through the school of initiation. Biazin shows the life of four adolescents in their intitiates’ clothing: adults watch over them day and night, guide them and punish them if necessary. After six months, a final ceremony gives them the status of men. They will be fishermen, hunters, farmers and blacksmiths, under the elders’ eye. J.-D. Pénel
