Long-necked vase and lid
Egypt, Asyut. 19th century. Lustred pottery
Purchased by Hyppolite-Jean Gosse, director of the Archeology Museum, in 1875; context of creation not documented
MEG Inv. ETHAF K000447
An elegant souvenir of a cruise on the Nile between Cairo and Aswan, the earthenware crockery produced in Asyut was a great success with wealthy 19th century European “tourists”. Local potters drew inspiration from European silverware shapes in order to please these foreign customers who made them famous beyond the borders of Egypt, up until the First World War.
